Their exceptional eyesight, independently controlled wings and spined legs allow them to pursue, capture and sometimes consume prey without ever landing.

The female lays her eggs directly into floating or submerged vegetation. Beneath the water, the young dragonfly lives as a predatory nymph, hunting small aquatic animals before climbing from the pond and undergoing its extraordinary final transformation into a winged adult.
